Economy 3.0, provably fair games, and a smarter honeypot

greed·

This release is mostly about trust. The economy had a flaw that let a few people print money, so it has been rebuilt from the market up and reset. Every game result can now be verified by anyone, and the honeypot explains itself to the people it catches and to your appeal reviewers.

The economy has been reset

What went wrong

The stock market was built so prices drifted back towards an average. That made the next move predictable: a share below its average was expected to rise, so "buy low, sell high" paid off on average instead of being a gamble. Prices could also swing up to ~35% every 15 minutes, and there was no limit on how much you could hold. A handful of accounts compounded that roughly every day.

By the time we caught it, the market had created about 6.5 quintillion coins — against roughly 4 trillion from daily, work, crime and objectives combined. The richest balances passed two quintillion, and one very large sale failed because the amount no longer fit in the database, taking the shares without paying for them.

Those coins can't be separated from money people earned honestly, so every balance, business, share, loan, tier and objective has been reset. Everyone starts again on equal terms, under the rules below.

A market you can't game

Prices now follow a pure random walk: the expected next price is always the current price, from any starting point. We test that no "buy the dip" strategy wins on average on any ticker.

Price updatesEvery 15 minutes
Daily movement1.5–5% depending on the ticker
Spread (ask − bid)0.5–1.5% depending on the ticker

Holding lockShares can't be sold for 1 hour after buying
DividendsUp to ~0.07% a day, only on shares held 24 hours

Businesses that actually pay

Two bugs meant businesses barely worked:

  • ,business collect always collected nothing. It reset your pending income to zero and then reported the zero back. No business has paid out correctly until now.
  • Upkeep and loan interest only came out of your wallet. If your coins were in the bank, the payment counted as missed, turned into debt, and after three misses a business was seized — so saving was punished.

Upkeep now comes out of that day's business income first, then your wallet, then your bank. Only what none of them can cover becomes debt.

Returns were rebalanced so a business is an investment rather than a money printer: roughly 1% of its price a day for a Vending Route, falling to ~0.4% for a Casino Floor, with some days paying nothing. A business takes about 100–250 days to pay for itself.

Money moves slower now

  • Transfers carry a 5% tax, paid by the sender, and a daily limit that grows with your tier: 2,500 at Broke up to 60M at Titan, tax included, over a rolling 24 hours. This is what stopped large balances being spread across alt accounts.
  • Balances are capped at 10 billion per wallet and per bank, so no amount can overflow again.
  • The inflation index is gone. Prices, rewards and payouts are fixed numbers. The index amplified the market leak — once the money supply exploded, every objective reward was multiplied by 50.

Tiers and objectives

Objective rewards used to add up to roughly the net worth needed for your next tier, so objectives alone carried people up the ladder. They're now a small bonus on top of playing:

Now1.7K74K300K4M

Top-tier betting limits came down too, because a single lucky streak at the old caps could jump someone hundreds of millions:

Max bet100K250K500K1M2M

Over a simulated year of play the median player now ends around 0.6M and the very richest around 50–90M.

Smaller fixes

  • Crash no longer counts a round that reaches its final tick as a loss — it cashes you out.
  • A game you walk away from is settled after two minutes: blackjack stands, cash-out games cash out, and mines with nothing revealed is refunded. If greed restarts mid-game, your bet is refunded.
  • Double-clicking Cash Out can no longer pay a win twice.
  • ,objectives claim with no name claims everything that's ready.

Provably fair

Every game — and every ,work, ,crime, ,rob and business payout — is decided by your own seeds before you play, using the same scheme as the major crypto casinos, so any provably-fair verifier can check it:

result = HMAC_SHA256(server seed, "client seed:nonce:round")
each number = b0/256 + b1/256² + b2/256³ + b3/256⁴
  • The server seed stays secret while you play, but you see its SHA-256 hash before every bet, so it can't be swapped afterwards.
  • The client seed is yours — pick any text you like.
  • The nonce goes up by one with every bet.

Games with several steps are fully decided when you bet: the whole blackjack deck, where the mines are, every high/low card, every ladder rung, the crash point, and the scratch card's prize. Your choices only change how much of that you reveal.

CommandWhat it does
Provably Fair buttonOn every game result: the seed hash, client seed, nonce and result for that bet
,fairYour current seeds and the hash of the next server seed
,fair rotate [seed]Reveals your server seed and starts a new pair (optionally with your own client seed)
,fair verify <id>Replays a bet from its seeds and confirms the result matches
,fair betsYour recent bets with their ids and nonces (kept 30 days)

You can't rotate while a game is still in progress — otherwise you could learn where the mines are.

A smarter honeypot

We compared greed's honeypot with the most widely used standalone honeypot bot and closed the gaps.

Appeals now show the context. When someone the honeypot banned submits an appeal, your review channel gets a Caught by the honeypot card: which channel, when, and exactly what they posted. Almost every honeypot catch is a hacked account, so reviewers can decide in seconds.

/honeypot is also a slash command now, so setup is one click away, and a trap channel deleted in Discord is removed from the honeypot automatically.

Versioning and /changelog

greed now has real version numbers, written as MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH followed by a build number and commit, for example v5.2.0 build.885.db7ec06c. The build number goes up with every change we ship, so two deploys of the same version are still distinguishable.

  • ,botinfo shows the exact version and build running.
  • /changelog shows the latest release in Discord, with a menu and Older / Newer buttons to browse every release and its build.
  • This page stays the detailed version of each release.

10% off for new servers

When you add greed to a server, the welcome DM to the owner has a Get Premium (10% off) button. It takes 10% off the first payment of any User or Server Premium plan, by card, PayPal or crypto, and is valid for 7 days after greed joins. It's only for the server's owner and isn't available through Discord's in-app purchases.
